Presidential election predetermined: HHK is without rival

“The parliamentary elections in Armenia and the developments related to them were the most interesting thing this year,” political scientist, Director of Caucasus Institute Alexander Iskandarian stated at a meeting with reporters today, when summing up the political year in Armenia.

He noted that the parliamentary elections have changed the political landscape of Armenia, and for the first time in the history of independent Armenia, all the major political forces have been represented in the parliament. “After the parliamentary elections, politics in Armenia moved from the streets into the parliament”.

In his words, the country is on the eve of a presidential election, there will be political activity, but the main developments are taking place on mass media pages and in the parliament.

As for the upcoming presidential election, Iskandarian said that Gagik Tsarukian’s decision not to run for President has also introduced changes in the political palette.

“I think the presidential election is predetermined, the Republicans are without a real rival. I don’t think a real rival-candidate will emerge within a month,” the political scientist said.

Speaking about Armenia’s foreign policy, he said that it continues to be reactive, cautious, and in the spirit of compelementarism.
Iskandarian said that there have been no serious developments in the Karabakh issue this year and no changes are expected in the near future, the stability will remain.
