Some 6 thousand Syrian Armenians are now in Armenia

Today Minister of Diaspora Ms. Hranush Hakobian gave a press conference to sum up this year’s results. According to her, there are 6 thousand Syrian Armenians in the country now, 695 children attend schools and kindergartens, 220 students study at universities.

The minister also spoke about the work aimed at providing employment to Syrian Armenians, noting that active work has been done in this direction. The Syrian Armenians receive free medical services, 100 people were given lodging, and 20 families are staying with local families. The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) has helped 300 families to rent apartments by providing 60,000 AMD to each family. Courses on the Eastern Armenian language have been organized for Syrian Armenians. 
The minister said the Ministry of Diaspora also assisted with the foundation of “Center for Coordination of Syrian Armenians’ Issues” NGO that registers vulnerable Syrian-Armenian families. Syrian Armenians have so far received compensation of $2 million.
