Karine Danielian summarizes environmental year
The Chairwoman of “For Sustainable Human Development” NGO Karine Danielian summarized the environmental year today. She spoke about problems related to use of the Earth’s interior. In her words, there is much to be done in the sphere: ”previously, areas covered by forests and health-resort zones were not damaged, whereas now there are open mines and processing plants in such areas”. Danielian announced that a concept to deal with these problems will be developed.
“Laws and government decisions exist, but our greed kills everything,” the speaker noted.
She touched upon the problem of small hydropower plants as well, noting that the program is good, but many villages are deprived of irrigation water. In addition, the small hydropower plants’ construction standards are not met.
In her words, ecotourism has become a barbeque eating activity, and cited the example of Parz Lich (Clear Lake) that has been turned into a turbid lake.
Speaking about the positive steps in the environmental protection sphere, Ms. Danielian mentioned the rise in the level of Lake Sevan.
