“Ter-Petrosian understands that he cannot be serious alternative”
“It is regrettable that Ter-Petrosian is not running in the election, and now we can say with certainty that Serzh Sargsyan is the elected President. Thus, the electoral process was deprived of elements of even elementary competition”. Political scientist Suren Sureniants expressed this opinion during a talk with Aysor.am correspondent , when commenting on Ter-Petrosian’s decision not to run for President. In the past 18 months, Sureniants has claimed that the first Armenia president would not run in the election.
Let us remind you that first Armenian President Levon ter-Petrosian has announced that he will not run in the upcoming presidential election, explaining the decision by his age. He said it is time for younger persons to enter the field.
Sureniants does not take Ter-Petrosian’s argument seriously, citing examples of other countries where there were not any force majeure situations, but political figures aged 60 and over ran for President and won the election.
“The non-nomination of Ter-Petrosian has a more serious motives as in the past 5 years he has scattered all public resource he had, he lost all outstanding figures of his team, and now he realizes that his political depreciation will not allow him to be a serious alternative in the upcoming presidential election,” Sureniants explained.
He noted that today the first Armenian president is quitting politics once and for all, leaving behind a system which is in a sad state.
When asked whether the leader of freedom Party Hrant Bagratian may become a joint opposition candidate, the political scientist replied that Bagratian is a serious political figure. He expressed hope that Bagratian will succeed in uniting liberal forces round himself.
“Unfortunately, HAK is a person-centered structure. In all likelihood, now that Ter-Petrosian has left, HAK (Armenian National Congress) will break up once again,” S. Sureniants said in conclusion.
