The oligarchs and their position in Armenia are weakening. This is the decline of oligarchs’ era. Director of the Regional Studies Center (RSC), analyst Richard Giragosian said at a meeting with reporters today ,when summing up the internal political developments in 2012.

According to the analyst, the authorities and government realized that oligarchs are number one enemy for the country. “The oligarchs will no longer be able to strengthen their position in the country”.

Commenting on the May 6 parliamentary elections held in Armenia, Giragosian noted they were good, but not sufficient. “These elections reflect the existing situation, and it is through these elections that the current dynamic opposition exists”.

As for the upcoming presidential election, Richard Giragosian said: “It is clear that the incumbent president will be re-elected, but the election is going to be non-competitive, which means that the electoral process should be free and fair,” the analyst said, adding that expectations from the election will be high because of the low level of competition. 
In the analyst’s words, new political will is likely to form after the presidential election.
“We see a deep conflict that is going to take place within the elite, rather than between the authorities and the opposition,” R. Giragosian said.
