Some residents of Gyumri live in “barracks” built in 1926 (video)

In the city of Gyumri, one can still see temporary buildings constructed after the 1926 earthquake. Most of such buildings are inhabited. These wooden structures resembling dwelling houses in Russian villages are Soviet-time “kommunalkas” (communal apartments) that housed several families.Gyumri residents call these buildings “barracks”. They were constructed in a number of districts of Leninakan (former name of Gyumri), one of the districts is still called “Barracks”.

A few dwellings of this type still remain in Gyumri’s Severski district, in the vicinity of the military barracks of a Russian unit.

This video provided by “Shirak Center” is about a family (with four sons) that moved from the nearby village of Arapi and has lived without registration for over 18 years in a “barrack’ in Severski district of Gyumri.
