Expert: Situation in Georgia tense, but new authorities not in a hurry

The current situation in Georgia is quite tense: the statements about cooperation that the parties of M. Saakashvili and B. Ivanishvili made during the parliamentary elections have not become a reality as neither party is going to make concessions. Jonny Melikian, an expert on Georgia, expressed this opinion at a meeting with journalists today.

According to him, the parliamentary opposition and majority are engaged in a political struggle, although the country faces problems that need urgent solution. The expert noted such a situation will last until October.

“I don’t think the parliamentary majority will force Saakashvili to abandon power,” Melikian noted. As for the protests staged in Georgia, these actions are not aimed against any concrete political force, according to the expert.

“The people demonstrate that changes are needed, but the new authorities are not in a hurry. If the situation gets worse, Georgian Dream coalition will have problems,” Melikian said.

It is noteworthy that yesterday a protest action took place in Javakhk as well. Protesters demanded that new local government elections be held as Mikhail Saakashvili’s supporters continue to hold various positions there.
