Garni observatory can predict earthquakes 18 hours in advance

Secretary of National Security Council Arthur Baghdasarian, accompanied by Minister of Emergency Situations Armen Yeritsian, visited today the observatory in Garni, the NSC press service reported.

Arthur Baghdasarian and Armen Yeritsian familiarized themselves with the current state of the observatory and discussed the opportunities of its re-launch and upgrading.

“The operation of the geophysical observatory in Garni is crucial to national security”, A. Baghdasarian told journalists. He also stressed that this complex is of strategic importance to the country.

“A few days ago I visited the Byurakan observatory, which is considered a national value. I believe that this complex should also be included in the list of national values as it is the world’s second most powerful infrastructure. The station allows predicting earthquakes 18 hours in advance within a radius of 12,000 kilometers, thanks to which preventive measures can also be taken if necessary. We can thus provide assistance not only to Armenia, but also to other countries. The observatory will be upgraded and put into operation as quickly as possible,” Baghdasarian stated.

According to him, investments will be attracted to upgrade the station and equip it with modern equipment. It is also planned to deepen international cooperation with similar stations in order to use the best knowledge and experience in this field.
