Makeyan: Last congress of HAK took place in quite sad atmosphere

“A struggle for the title of opposition has been waged in the opposition field in recent years, while the authorities took advantage of it and retained their power,” Chairman of Democratic Homeland Party Petros Makeyan said at the meeting with reporters today.

In his words, the latest congress of Armenian National Congress (HAK) Party took place in quite a sad atmosphere. He expressed an opinion that it is the people who can ensure the continuity of processes in the opposition field.

According to Makeyan, the circumstance that the April 9 procession participants divided into two groups allowed them to avoid bloodshed and a repeat of the March 1 events.

“The energy in Liberty Square showed that the struggle will go on and people are ready to continue struggling,” Makeyan said.

The speaker noted that he sees further struggle of the opposition possible in using the Karabakh Committee’s model when local committees are set up in each region. “New committees can be called “Armenia” committees,” he suggested.

As for the actions of Police Chief Vladimir Gasparian in Baghramian Avenue, Makeyan said Gasparian’s actions reduced the “energy” in Bagramian Avenue and allowed avoiding clashes.

“The situation in Baghramian Avenue was, nevertheless, controlled by Raffi Hovannisian,” Makeyan added.
