Obama avoids “genocide” term again

U.S. President Barack Obama issued today an April 24 statement marking what he termed “the Meds Yerghern … one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century”.

Carefully avoiding the term “genocide”, Obama stated that “98 years ago, 1.5 million Armenians were massacred were marched to their deaths in the final days of the Ottoman Empire”.

While campaigning, Obama had indicated his intention to apply the term “genocide”. Once in office, he shifted position.

“Today we stand with Armenians everywhere in recalling the horror of the Meds Yerghern, honoring the memory of those lost, and affirming our enduring commitment to the people of Armenia,” the final part of the statement said, according to the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).
