Government approves air traffic liberalization strategy

At the session held today, the Armenian government approved a strategy of stage-by-stage liberalization of air traffic. Head of the Main Department of Civil Aviation Artyom Movsisian said that the Armenian government, the Main Department of Civil Aviation, and the Public Council organized a series of discussions to examine the prospects of air transportation development.

Three main directions were outlined during discussions: establishment of a state airline or an airline with a state stake, implementation of an open sky policy by the government, and implementation of a stage-by-stage liberalization policy by the government.

Taking into account the current state of international civil aviation, it was decided to choose the third option and implement a stage-by-stage liberalization policy, A. Movsisian noted.

The stage-by-stage liberalization policy aims to encourage competition in civil aviation sector. At least three Armenian air carriers will operate after the strategy is adopted.

Artyom Movsisian told journalists they plan to hold a tender for three main directions: CIS countries, European countries, and countries of the Middle East.
