Armenia expects legal assessment of Safarov case from ECHR

A delegation of the RA National Assembly headed by the Speaker Hovik Abrahamian paid a working visit to Strasbourg on June 26-27 in connection with Armenia’s Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, the press service of the Armenian parliament reported.

Hovik Abrahamian met with President of the PACE Jean-Claude Mignon in Strasbourg.

Welcoming H. Abrahamian, the PACE President stressed the importance of the Armenian parliamentary speaker’s visit and his presence at the PACE session. Jean-Claude Mignon thanked the Armenian parliament for the excellent organization of the meetings of the PACE’s Bureau and Standing Committee in Yerevan. He attached importance to Armenia’s Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the CE, the declared priorities, and the agenda.

During the visit H. Abrahamian also met with President of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Dean Spielmann.
Abrahamian stated he appreciates ECHR’s work on protection of human rights of Europeans living in 47 Council of Europe members states.

The speaker of Armenian parliament spoke about the Safarov case conducted by ECHR, noting that it is a problem of not only Armenia, but also the international community.

“Armenia expects that the European Court of Human Rights will address the mentioned issue from a legal point of view and give an adequate legal assessment, which is important for preventions of such inadmissible acts, “Abrahamian said.
ECHR President appreciated the visit of the Armenian parliamentary speaker. He said with satisfaction that he will visit Yerevan soon to attend an international forum on European standards of the rule of law.

As for the Safarov case, Dean Spielmann said that ECHR has experience of conducting such sensitive cases and a legal assessment will undoubtedly be given.

Other issues were also discussed at the meeting.
