Armenian president receives Dean Spielmann
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan received today President of the European Court of Human Rights Dean Spielmann, the presidential press service reports.
S. Sargsyan welcomed the visit of ECHR President to Armenia, especially as it is paid in connection with one of the most important events under Armenia’s Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe – the international conference “The European Legal Standards of Rule of Law and the Scope of Discretion of Powers in the Member-States of the Council of Europe.
In the words of S. Sargsyan, Armenia is an active member of the Council of Europe. It participates in the organization’s work at all levels, making its contribution to all processes and the establishment of the all-European agenda. He stated that it is a great honor and responsibility for Armenia to assume the Chairmanship of the Council of Europe 12 years after it joined the organization.
The Armenian president appreciated the role of ECHR in protection of rights of some 800 million people living in Council of Europe countries.
Noting that it is first visit to Armenia, Dean Spielmann said with satisfaction that the visit is taking place during Armenia’s Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. In his words, he had a number of fruitful meetings with high-ranking officials of Armenia.
The interlocutors exchanged opinions about the process of court and legal reforms in Armenia, the country’s cooperation with European structures, and the current activities of ECHR.
