Shatirian: The Constitution is mostly violated by executive bodies

The constitutional clauses related to human rights and freedoms are mainly violated in Armenia today. Candidate of Law, Associate Professor of the Constitutional Law Sub-department of Yerevan State University Edgar Shatirian expressed that opinion at a press conference today.

According to him, fundamental human rights and freedoms are mostly violated by executive bodies. He noted that ordinary citizens and officials are ignorant of their rights and powers, which very often results in permissiveness.

Another participant of the press conference, YSU lecturer Gevorg Melkonian spoke about the history of Armenia’s Constitution. He said the first draft constitution of Armenia was Shahamir Shahamirian’s book “Traps of Ambition” released in 1773.

“The book is line with the European system of values,” Melkonian said.

We would remind you that on July 5, 1995, a referendum was held on the draft Constitution prepared by ideologists of the Armenian All-National Movement (HHSh) Party. The people approved the draft. In 2005, amendments to the Constitution were approved at the November 27 referendum.
