Shahnazarian: Entry into Customs Union to strain relations with Georgia

The statements made by President Serzh Sargsyan in Moscow can be described in the following way: sovereignty in return for ‘security’, the head of Accord Center David Shahnazarian said at a meeting with journalists today.

“It is obvious that the decision was made in the past few days and under tremendous pressure of Russia. I should mention two manifestations of pressure. One is the threat of a new war by Azerbaijan, one striking demonstration of which was Russia’s sale of arms to Azerbaijan. Secondly, it is the pressure related to the fact that Russia may aggravate the internal situation in Armenia,” Shahnazarian noted.

He expressed an opinion that following the statement, Armenian-Georgian relations may become strained.

“In all likelihood, Georgia will opt to cooperate with Azerbaijan and Turkey,” D. Shahnazarian said.
