Sahakian: Entry into Customs Union doesn’t endanger our sovereignty

There is nothing sensational in Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union, the head of Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) parliamentary faction Galust Sahakian told journalists tin the parliament today.

“The interest in joining the Customs Union should be shown by the Armenian side. As regards the Eurasian Union, there are no drafts for discussion yet,” he noted.

According to G. Sahakian, President Serzh Sargsyan discussed everything with HHK members before leaving for Moscow. As to the discontent of the other parliamentary deputies with the fact that they were not informed about that, Sahakian said: “They are not HHK members”.

In response to the remark that the public is also displeased with the decision and perhaps a referendum on the issue should have been held, the deputy chairman of HHK reminded reporters that decision making is among the powers of the president.

“In case of such an approach, every treaty should be discussed with the people before its signing. The president has such powers. When the time comes, the documents will be presented in the parliament and discussed, with the participation of deputies,” G. Sahakian noted.
