Sureniants: Closed Market problem should not be politicized

“The civil movement in Armenia has been one of the most important achievements of our people since 2008, despite the fact that it is being guided by various forces and is taking the wrong course,” political scientist Suren Sureniants said at a meeting with journalists today, when discussing the reconstruction of the Closed Market in downtown Yerevan. In his words, many shadow phenomena surround that movement.

Sureniants said that a movement without an agenda and an opportunity of dialog turns into an end in itself and leads to clashes with the police, due to which the problem itself is very often consigned to oblivion.

The political scientist informed those present that he examined the problem of the Closed Market by meeting with interested persons, including Samvel Aleksanian, and he believes that against the backdrop of the incomprehensible demands of activists, the main problem is being sidelined.

‘The Closed Market problem is not a new one. I discussed this subject with Tigran Khzmalian and Garegin Chugaszian who say the process should grow into a political struggle. I don’t share their opinion,” Sureniants noted.
