Expert: Turkey calls for UN Security Council reform

Turkey’s expectations concerning the Syrian problem have not been realized. So, in addition to steps aimed at military action against Syria, Turkey has also launched international security initiatives, expert on Turkey Levon Hovsepian told the correspondent of Aysor.am.

In his words, Turkey proposes reforming the United Nations Security Council. In particular, Turkey proposes that the number of permanent members of the UN Security Council be increased from 5 to 11, while the number of its non-permanent members should be increased to 25. In this case, veto right will be replaced by majority vote.

Turkey was a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2009-2010 and it filed a new application for 2015-2016. Yet, “Turkey also wants to become a permanent member of the Security Council and it tries to ensure the needed seat by proposing such reforms. Turkey announced its plans to turn Istanbul into a regional intermediary center of the UN. It has already taken some steps in that direction, as a result of which a number of regional offices of the UN and other international structures have been moved to its territory,” Levon Hovsepian said.

According to the expert, Turkey seeks to become a global player, which is also evident from statements of the Turkish authorities.
