James Appathurai: There is no military resolution to Karabakh conflict

The Armenian authorities gave assurances that the country’s membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization does not create any problems for cooperation with the NATO, the Special Representative of the NATO Secretary General for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai told a press conference today.

We understand strategic relations of Armenia and Russia. It is Armenia’s sovereign choice, but Armenia has always followed a balanced foreign policy and expanded cooperation with NATO, J. Appathurai said.

According to him, NATO assists Armenia with the creation of a new defense system as well as modernization of military education in order to bring it into line with high standards.

NATO supports the OSCE Minsk Group’s efforts on settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, James Appathurai said.
He noted that NATO cooperates with both Armenia and Azerbaijan and speaks at all meetings about the need to solve the Karabakh conflict by peaceful means. In his words, there is no military resolution to the conflict. The sole resolution is based on compromise. All regional countries will get economic and political benefits from the conflict resolution.
