Aram Sargsyan: Unlike Customs Union, EU is established structure

“Unlike the Customs Union, the European Union is an established structure. Today we have to make a choice between two organizations: we want to become part of one of them, and we are forced to join the other,” the chairman of Republic Party Aram Sargsyan told journalists at the founding congress of HHSh Party today, when commenting on Armenia’s foreign policy.
“I am against any coercion, especially coercion towards something that has no future,” he noted.

Asked whether the decision on entry into the Customs Union can be revoked, Aram Sargsyan said their party conducted negotiations with several political forces and outlined maximum and minimum programs.

“The minimum program envisages doing everything so that Armenia will not become a member of the senseless, unpromising Customs Union. By the maximum program, we should take measures so that – if not through the Vilnius summit, then later - Armenia and its younger generation could be part of the EU and live according to European and fundamental values,” Aram Sargsyan said.

When asked what position his brother Vazgen Sargsyan would take on this issue, Aram Sargsyan replied that his brother always acted for the benefit of Armenian statehood. “If you think he would accept Armenia’s decision on entry into the Customs Union, you are sadly mistaken,” he said.
