Safrastian: Turkey’s membership in Customs Union unrealistic

Turkey’s membership in the Customs Union is unrealistic at the current stage – there are no real prerequisites for that, Ruben Safrastian, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RA National Academy of Sciences, told reporters today.

“This is part of Turkey’s game conditioned by the disagreements with the U.S. and the European Union. Turkey wants to exert pressure in this way,” Safrastian said.

He reminded reporters that the EU suspended the talks on Turkey’s membership of the EU¬ due to Turkey’s failure to fulfill the obligations assumed.

‘”he European Union recently declared it would resume the talks. Ankara has not made an official statement about its wish to join the Customs Union,” Safrastian said.
