Expert: Azerbaijan becomes more aggressive
“The steps taken by Azerbaijan in the recent period indicate that this country has become more aggressive in both military and political terms,” military expert Gagik Karapetian told the correspondent of Aysor.am when discussing the situation at the frontline ahead of the upcoming summit of the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents.
In his words, experience shows that ahead of all important meetings or after them, Azerbaijan displays activity on the line of contact. Azerbaijan is also expected to maintain tension this time.
“Azerbaijan started preparations for that meeting about a month ago when shots at Armenian positions and civilian settlements became more frequent. They don’t fire for no reason at all – everything is calculated. And you should not forget that in addition to shots being fired at civilian population, Azerbaijan intensively arms itself, trying to prove that it is ready for the conflict’s resolution by military means,” the expert noted.
Asked whether Azerbaijan’s bellicose statements and its purchases of weapons can be considered as pressure on the Armenian side, the expert said, ”This is pressure, but on the international community, rather than on Armenia because many countries made investments in Azerbaijan and are unwilling to risk their investment”.
