Yuri Shevtsov: Interest in Armenia has grown in Belarus

The likelihood of an armed conflict between the U.S. and Iran has declined, Director of Noravank Scientific and Educational Foundation Gagik Harutyunian said at a meeting with reporters today when speaking about the international forum ‘Security and Cooperation in the South Caucasus’ to be held in Yerevan.

In his words, the ongoing process between Iran and the United States will have a positive impact on regional developments.
“Important developments took in the South Caucasus: Armenia decided to join the Customs Union, while Georgia is trying to improve relations with Moscow,” G. Harutyunian said.

Belarusian political scientist, Director of the Center for European Integration Problems Yuri Shvetsov said for his part that interest in Armenia has grown in Belarus following Armenia’s decision on entry into the Customs Union.

“Belarus shows interest in the situation in the South Caucasus and the role Armenia may play in the Customs Union”, Shvetsov noted.

Another participant of the meeting, Director of the Institute for Middle East Strategic Studies in Tehran Kayhan Barzegar said when discussing security problems in the South Caucasus that Iran’s security ideologycan be divided into two components: cooperation of Iran and Russia in the South Caucasus and cooperation between Iran and the West.

‘The Syrian crisis showed how close the positions of Iran and Russia on the Syrian problem are. The conflict in Syria showed that Russia, Iran, and Turkey play an important role in the region,” Barzegar said.

According to him, Iran’s new policy concerning the West will contribute to peace and security in the South Caucasian region.
