S. Ohanian: In 2013 Armenian army fulfilled its combat task

In 2013 the Armenian army fulfilled its combat task, forcing the enemy to refrain from aggression, Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian said at a press conference today when summarizing the 2013 results.

In his words, the enemy got evidence that the Armenian soldier safeguarding peace stands on the border.

“The enemy displayed activity, especially in Tavush. Subversive attempts were made and unfortunately we suffered losses. I state here in your presence that I am proud of those servicemen’s parents who brought up heroes. I bow my head respectfully before all the soldiers,” Ohanian said.

According to him, 2013 was a year of serious achievements. “I want to underline constant work aimed at improving combat watch skills. We reinforced engineering structures at our combat positions, which will minimize the possibility of subversive acts,” the minister said.

He stressed the importance of the new principles of re-manning the Armenian Armed Forces.

“The creation of a contract-based sergeant system and an increase in the number of contract servicemen forms a basis for the transition to a professional army following the establishment of peace. Another way to re-man the army is conscription, which was done this year in a new way - by drawing of lots. Protection and mediation were ruled out during the draft thanks to this,” the minister noted.
