President receives British Group Inter-parliamentary Union’s delegation
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan received today the British Group Inter-parliamentary Union’s delegation led by John Whittingdale, according to the presidential press service.
The president welcomed the guests, noting with satisfaction that some members of the delegation have visited Armenia several times and that they are familiar with the agenda of Armenian-British relations and made a contribution to the development of bilateral cooperation. S. Sargsyan expressed hope that the other members of the delegation who arrived in Armenia for the first time will have the opportunity to get to know the country during their visit. “In terms of deepening Armenia-UK relations, of course, I attach importance to inter-parliamentary cooperation and the activities of British-Armenian group. I am sure that the revival that we have seen in the past two years is also a result of the active participation of this faction and other parliamentarians. We are always interested in deepening these relations,” the president stated.
He also underlined the importance of visits paid by MPs to Karabakh. The president thanked those MPs who visited Artsakh and familiarized themselves with the state building process on the spot, which will help them present the objective truth about Artsakh to the British public.
Expressing their gratitude for the reception, the British MPs expressed a willingness to continue and intensify their efforts to assist Armenia and the Armenian people - efforts which are aimed at strengthening and deepening of Armenian-British bilateral ties, further development of Armenia-EU relations, and solution of the problems to importance to Armenia.
During the meeting President Sargsyan answered the guests’ questions related to Armenia’s domestic and foreign policies, the further development of Armenian-British ties, the future of Armenia-EU relations and the cooperation prospects, Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union, regional problems, the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh problem and the efforts made by Armenia and the international community in that direction.
