Parliamentary speaker promises discussion of Nairit problem

The National Assembly today urgently debates the draft decision on the creation of an interim parliamentary commission on Nairit Plant’s problems.

The speaker Hovik Abrahamian said that the authorities are in favor of forming such a commission. By the draft, the commission should examine the issues related to the plant’s privatization, debt liabilities, and the reasons why it did not operate at the required capacity.

“To be frank, I was opposed to the inclusion of the issue in the agenda of the dour-day sittings of the parliament, but we have no desire to hide something,” Abrahamian noted.

Addressing the deputies, the speaker said that he promises to create an opportunity to discuss the problem of Nairit Plant CJSC. “I promise the ARFD deputies that the problem will be discussed,” Hovik Abrahamian said.

We would remind you that on February 3, 2014, the parliamentary majority took a decision to postpone for a year the examination of ARFD deputies’ proposal on the creation of an interim parliamentary commission on Nairit Plant’s problems. After a vote, ARFD deputy Artsvik Minasian clarified that the aim of setting up a commission is to create conditions for the government to provide full information on the problems at the plant. The deputy said that regardless of the vote results, they would include urgently the issue in the agenda of the sittings due on February 24-27, which was done.

Nairit workers are holding a protest outside the parliament today. They were joined by members of the ARFD Party’s youth wing. The protesters demand that MPs support the draft decision on creation of a commission to examine Nairit Plant’s credit obligations and deals.
