G. Sahakian: Opposition does not need commission on March 1 events

The oppositionists themselves do not want an ad hoc parliamentary commission for examination of the March 1, 2008 events in Yerevan to be set up, the head of Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) faction Galust Sahakian told a briefing in the Armenian parliament today.

In his words, if representatives of the opposition really wanted creation of such a commission, they would try to persuade the parliamentary majority and conduct a constructive dialog instead of blaming and criticizing the majority.

“We are not investigators and criminologists. This work is done by the appropriate bodies. The opposition is afraid itself, but speaks about courage,” G. Sahakian said.

He expressed confidence that no matter how much time passes since the tragic events, not only the criminals, but also those who directed people on March 1 will be revealed. “It is ruled out that such crimes will go undetected,” he noted.

When asked if HHK will vote in favor of the draft decision on creation of an ad hoc commission on the March 1 events, Galust Sahakian replied that there is still time until the next sitting and their faction will discuss the matter.
