Demographer: We have problem of 220,000 Armenian migrant workers
Russia’s new immigration law has already barred 50,000 Armenians from entering the country, while another 170,000 violated the Russian migration legislation and will also not be allowed to enter Russia for 3-5 years when they arrive at airports and before officials of the migration services, demographer Ruben Yeganian told journalists today.
“This spring Armenia will have a problem with some 220,000 people who need a job,” Yeganian noted, adding that the country has no opportunity to give jobs to so many people, but it can only offer 5,000 jobs at low wages at the best.
If employers agree to sign labor contracts with Armenian employees, then migrant workers will be prepared to live and work in Russia, but very often verbal agreements are reached, the demographer stressed.
In his words, there is a myth in Russia that migrant workers are bad, although he did not rule out that immigrants are an active mass and often behave in a disorderly manner.
According to Yeganian, some part of the population may be left without jobs and income before solutions are found. “Armenian migrant workers already presented with a fait accompli today,” he noted.
