Deputies vote against creation of commission on March 1 events

The National Assembly of Armenia today held a discussion and a vote on the creation of an interim parliamentary commission to examine the March 1, 2008 events in Yerevan.

Secretary of Prosperous Armenia (BHK) faction Naira Zohrabian made a speech prior to the vote. She said that BHK faction will vote for creation of a commission on the March 1 events and urged the other political forces to follow BHK’s suit.

“If we want to get answers to these serious questions, we should vote in favor of creation of an interim parliamentary commission. Those who have nothing to conceal should vote for the draft decision,” N. Zohrabian stated.

The head of Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) faction Galust Sahakian said for his part: “We take the issue seriously. Those thinking that now it is time for a show are mistaken. We examined the activities of three commissions and consider the establishment of a fourth one as inexpedient”.

In the words of deputy of Armenian National Congress (HAK) faction Gagik Jangirian, none of the deputies made a meaningful proposal during the discussion.

“I am amazed that everyone speaks in favor of the crime’s solution and the criminals’ punishment, but at the same time nothing is being done in this direction,” Jangirian noted.

The head of Heritage faction Ruben Hakobian said yet another show is being organized: “I try to understand why you are unwilling to vote in favor. You are staging a show here as though you want the March 1 case to be solved, but you at the same time vote against the commission’s creation”.

46 deputies voted for the creation of a commission on the March 1 events, 66 voted against, and one deputy abstained.
