Foreign minister pledges to alleviate plight of Armenians from Kesab

The Armenian president’s statement about the events in Armenian-populated town of Kesab in Syria bear evidence of the deep concern of the Armenian side, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said today during the government hour in the Armenian parliament.

“The problem was voiced in various diplomatic missions of Armenia. Our embassy in Damascus received instructions and the necessary work is now being done,” Nalbandian said.

According to him, until recently Armenians made up 70% of Kesab’s population. About 700 families have now settled in Latakia. Those who have no relatives have taken shelter in the local Armenian church. A group of Armenian parliamentary deputies met with them in Latakia today, and meetings are scheduled in Damascus tomorrow, the minister said.

“Our compatriots are in a difficult situation. Those who have the opportunity to give material help may do so through the Armenian Ministry of Diaspora. The matter concerns not only Armenians of Kesab, but the Syrian Armenians in general,” Nalbandian said.

He pledged that everything possible will be done to alleviate the plight of Armenians from Kesab.
