Aleppo Armenians: Kesab residents will return to town, but not soon

In the current situation the Syrian state performs its obligation to the full, representatives of Aleppo national authorities Karo Yuzbabshian and Nerses Sargsyan said at a meeting with reporters today. According to them, residents of Armenian-populated town of Kesab in Syria will return to their town, but not soon.

“It will take time for the region to be safe again. Our compatriots in Latakia are under the authorities’ protection now, but they are not at ease – they have abandoned their homes,” Yuzbashian noted.

Nerses Sargsyan added that the Armenian authorities’ reaction to the Kesab events was not quite definite.

“The matter concerns not only the Kesab community. It is a national problem. Kesab is the last remaining part of historic Armenia,” Nerses Sargsyan said.

When asked whether Armenians of Kesab could settle down in Armenia and Artsakh, Kamo Yuzbashian replied:

‘Of course. When a Syrian Armenian leaves Syria, Armenia and Artsakh are the first supporting point for them, but now it is necessary to wait and see what will happen”.

Both speakers stressed that Kesab was attacked by detachments made up of Turks and this fact must not go unnoticed by the international community.
