Possibility of keeping Zvartnost Airport’s old building under discussion

The chairman of the urban development and architecture sub-commission of Armenia’s Public Council Grigor Azizian on March 25 participated in the discussion about whether to keep the old building complex of Zvartnots Airport. The discussion was held by the Main Department of Civil Aviation under the Armenian government.

Azizian said the meeting was constructive and took place in an atmosphere of mutual understanding. The program of the airport’s further development and the possibility of keeping Zvartnots’ old (round) building were discussed.

An agreement was reached that architect- constructors should also be involved in the development of a new project by the concessioner and all the opportunities of preserving the old building should be examined.

The Public Council will follow the process and is prepared to hold discussions with the concessioner about the maintenance and further operation of the building complex.

‘”he Public Council proposes that the respective structure of Armenian Culture Ministry should consider the clause stipulated in the Council’s position concerning the possibility of including the round building of Zvartnots Airport in the state list of historical and cultural monuments.

The Public Council highly appreciates the readiness of the Armenian government and the concessioner to take public opinion into account and discuss such a program of the airport’s further development that will not endanger the round building,” the Public Council of Armenia said in a statement.
