Hovannisian: Under authorities we can forget about Genocide recognition

A rally of the opposition Heritage Party took place in Yerevan’s Liberty Square today, during which the party leader Raffi Hovannisian spoke about the main tasks such as the establishment of an independent Armenia, transfer of power to the people, and a revolution.

After enumerating the problems facing the country, the opposition politician said that all those who believe in these dictates of time – be it parties, NGOs or private persons – should gather in one square.

Raffi Hovannisian also discussed the vote on the Crimea issue held at the UN General Assembly meeting yesterday.
“A vote was held at the UN yesterday and we all know how the country’s authorities voted. They did not even abstain like China and Kazakhstan, decline to participate in the vote like other members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Under these authorities we can forget about the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and Artsakh’s independence. We can forget about Armenia’s independence, human rights, and free elections. These authorities should be changed from top to bottom and those who believe in this goal should unite,” R. Hovannisian said.

On March 27 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The resolution says in particular that the referendum in Crimea is illegal and cannot serve as a basis for changing the status of Crimea and Sevastopol.

100 members of the UN voted in favor of the resolution, 11 (including Armenia) voted against, and 58 abstained.
