Political scientist: US wants deployment of peacekeepers in Karabakh

“The proposals of OSCE Minsk Group American Co-chair James Warlick immediately caused a positive reaction of Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, whereas the Armenian side expressed restrained disagreement,” political scientist Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan told reporters today.

In his words, at the current stage the OSCE Minsk Group views the Nagorno Karabakh Republic as three elements, not as one element.

“At the conclusion of their latest regional trip, the Co-chairs declared they had visited Artsakh, Lachin and Karvachar. Artsakh expressed its clear-cut stance in connection with the OSCE Minsk Group’s position by saying that there will be no territorial concessions on the part of Karabakh,” the political scientist said.

According to him, James Warlick’s statements complicated the negotiating process and now the situation is more confused than after the Kazan meeting.

“The Co-chars’ different approaches are conditioned by the West-Russia confrontation due to the Ukraine crisis,” Melik-Shahnazaryan noted.

In his words, the United States wants deployment of peacekeeping forces in the region, in Artsakh, and the statements of James Warlick are aimed at accelerating that process.

“Being guided by their own interests, the Co-chair states of the Minsk Group put various kinds of pressure on the Karabakh conflicting parties”, the political scientist stressed.
