Political scientist: Karabakh did not file application for EaEU membership

“If anyone thinks that Armenia should join the Customs Union jointly with Nagorno Karabakh, they are mistaken. Nagorno Karabakh is a separate state,” Director of the Caucasus Institute, political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan told journalists today.

“Yes, there is a customs point between Armenia and Artsakh. It was the case and it will be so. Nagorno Karabakh did not file an application for membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU),” Iskandaryan said.

In his words, Nursultan Nazarbayev’s statement should be viewed in the context of relations of Kazakhstan, Russia and Azerbaijan.

“Kazakhstan has its problems with Russia. Belarus, which is also a member of the Customs Union, had serious disagreements with Russia. The point is that the Customs Union is a territory of constant disagreements among Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus,” Iskandaryan noted.

At the May 29 meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana, Kaxakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev read a letter of Azerbaijani President Ilham Alieyv, noting: “So as not to excite our friend in Azerbaijan, you should join the Eurasian Union with the borders fixed by the UN – as you joined the WTO”.
