Armen Petrosyan: Assad will be reelected Syrian president

The current President Bashar Assad will be reelected in the presidential elections held in Syria on June 3, orientalist Armen Petrosyan told journalists today.

According to him, an extremely tense situation in a military sense is expected in Syria today.

“The forces of the enemy are trying to hinder the elections by any means. A number of Western countries already declared that they will not recognize the Syrian elections as they are being held amid civil war. Despite this fact, 9,601 polling stations opened in Syria, with 15.8 million voters being registered,” Petrosyan noted.

In his words, if reelected, Bashar Assad will refute claims that he is an illegitimate president.

“There is great likelihood that Bashar Assad will win also for the reason that the public does not know the two other candidates - the Syrians learned about them only in the pre-election period,” the orientalist said.

As regards the Armenian community in Syria, he said that the community displays activity. “But the number of Syrian Armenians declined so their votes cannot be decisive,” Armen Petrosyan said.
