Gagik Harutyunyan: Syrian events endanger Armenia’s national security

The Syrian events are often described as a struggle between the authorities and the opposition, but a real war is being fought in Syria, Director of Noravank Scientific-Educational Foundation Gagik Harutyunyan told journalists today.

“It is a real, multipolar war, in which Syria and its ally Iran are fighting on one side and mercenaries serving the interests of some Arab states and NATO member countries on the other,” Harutyunyan noted.

In his words, the Syrian events endanger the national security of Armenia as well.

“It is a danger because Turks and Azerbaijanis are involved in the Syrian conflict, which shows that the processes in Syria pose a direct threat to the security of the Armenians, “ Gagik Harutyunyan said.

According to him, the Armenians living in the Middle East are those who escaped the Armenian Genocide. They are considered the bearers of Western Armenia’s culture and heirs of that civilizational section so Turkey pursues its goals and tries to realize them in the Syrian conflict,” he said.

“In all the countries where the Arab Spring took place, the Christians either suffered during the conflict or became refugees. The Syrian Armenians suffered not only physical and material damage, but also moral damage. The Syrian events show that Turkey did not change its national code. There is not a civil, but a hybrid war in Syria – with the participation of Turkey and Azerbaijan. Regular troops of Syria are fighting in that war on one side, while terrorist groups and commando troops servicing Turkey’s interests on the other side,” Harutyunyan said.

“It is a big humanitarian conflict which has elements of genocide. 8-10 million people became refugees and over a million died in that conflict. When the number of victims in a conflict exceeds 1 million, it is genocide,” the foundation head said.

In his opinion, cultural genocide is being committed In Syria, with most values being destroyed and robbed by Turks. He stressed that Turkey is a transit country, through which most of the pillage is transported and sold.
