Aliyev: Karabakh conflict should be settled on basis of compromise

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan hopes for a peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict in the near future, S. Sargsyan was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying this during a talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Ilham Aliyev said for his part that the Nagorno Karabakh conflict should be settled on the basis of compromise, as established by the OSCE Minsk Group.

Vladimir Putin stated that patience, wisdom and respect for each other are required to resolve the Karabakh conflict.

“We should display patience, wisdom and respect for each other so as to find this solution,” the Russian president said.

According to Interfax, V. Putin noted with satisfaction that the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan took note of the need to solve the problem by peaceful means.

“It is the main thing because there is no greater tragedy than loss of human lives,” Putin noted.

He indicated the need to act on the premise that the conflict around Karabakh arose long ago and “we inherited it from the Soviet Union”.

“No doubt, any difficult situation can be resolved if there is good will, and I believe that there is such good will on the part of the Azerbaijani people as well as the Armenian people,” Putin stressed.

He called on his counterparts to discuss the problem in a narrow format, to be followed by discussion with the participation of the members of the delegations.
