Mikhail Gorbachev is 'alive and well' after being discharged from hospital

The 83-year-old politician was today heading back to work after being discharged from a Moscow hospital - just one day after being admitted for unspecified medical tests, Daily Express reports.

"I am feeling better today than I was yesterday. That is why doctors agreed that it was possible to allow me to leave the clinic," Mr Gorbachev told Interfax.

"I have been discharged from the hospital and I am now heading to my office," he said.

Recent reports suggested that the Nobel Peace laureate, who is believed to be diabetic, had been "fighting for his life" following claims that the state of his health was "deteriorating."

A spokesperson for Mr Gorbachev confirmed that the politician had only been treated on "an outpatient basis.”

While he has yet to disclose what he was being tested for, Mr Gorbachev did confess to Ria Novosti that he was "hooked up to a monitor."

“My state of health has been moderate for a week and today I am in hospital,” Ria Novosti quoted the politician as saying yesterday.

He later told Interfax that he was in good spirits and was "determined to fight" for his life.
