Azerbaijan opens fire on Chinari village

The funeral for Karen Petrosyan, an Armenian civilian who crossed into Azerbaijan on August 7 of this year and was later killed, was held yesterday in Chinari village of Armenia’s Tavush province.

Chinari village administrator Samvel Saghoyan told Aysor.am that although the funeral passed without incident, after the funeral and this morning the Azerbaijani side violated the ceasefire.

“Shots were fired again. I don’t know whether it was related to Karen’s funeral or not, but there were relatively few shots since August,” Saghoyan said, adding that gunfire has stopped now.

As was reported, Karen Petrosyan was a resident of the border village located in the northeastern part of Armenia. On August 7 he accidentally crossed into Azerbaijani territory and was detained. Karen Petrosyan was shown being dragged by masked Azerbaijani soldiers in an image widely publicized by the Azerbaijani government. The following day Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry announced that K. Petrosyan suddenly died of heart failure. This official version of K. Petrosyan’s death has raised serious doubts.
