Vance’s office says deleted post about Armenian Genocide was “sent in error”

Vice President JD Vance’s office said a now-deleted post on X that recognized the 1915 mass killings of Armenians as a genocide was sent in error, Bloomberg reports.

Vance’s official X account posted a photo that has since been taken down of the vice president and second lady at the Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex that said they “attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Armenian Genocide memorial to honor the victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide.”

According to the issued clarification, an official from the Vice President’s staff who was not part of the delegation traveling with Vance made the post.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that there has been no change in U.S. policy.

Bloomberg recalls that in 2021, Joe Biden became the first U.S. president to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide, which caused discontent in Turkey.

Answering questions from reporters in Yerevan, Vance did not clarify whether he recognizes the genocide, noting that he made the visit at the request of Armenians and as a sign of respect for the victims and the Armenian government.
