Ruben Vardanyan transferred to Umbak penitentiary complex

Ruben Vardanyan has been transferred to the Umbak penitentiary complex. Human rights defender Siranush Sahakyan confirmed the information in an interview with Aysor.am.

She noted that the information was conveyed by Vardanyan’s family following a telephone conversation with him.

“In essence, the verdict has become legally binding, and Armenian detainees, according to Azerbaijani legislation, are no longer considered individuals under preventive detention but convicted prisoners. This also leads to a change in the penitentiary institution,” said Siranush Sahakyan.

She further added that similar practice has been applied in the cases of previously convicted Armenians. “For example, those captured since 2020 are currently also held in the Umbak penitentiary institution. Essentially, there has been a transfer from the NSS investigative isolator to another institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice.”
