Khachik Galstyan’s preventive measure has political motives, lawyer says

Witnesses in the case of Khachik Galstyan, Secretary General of the “Homeland” party, are being questioned today at the Anti-Corruption Court, lawyer Arsen Babayan told reporters.

“I hope that after the witnesses are questioned, the issue of the preventive measure will be reconsidered,” Babayan stated.

According to the lawyer, there are no grounds for keeping Khachik Galstyan under house arrest.

“If such risks truly existed, they could have been fully mitigated with bail set at 20 million drams. Yes, I continue to associate the decision on house arrest with the elections expected on June 7. We see that the authorities are trying to prevent political and public figures with opposition views from participating in the elections by applying pressure against them,” Babayan said.

He also emphasized that there is no testimony directly implicating Khachik Galstyan or confirming that he committed any criminal offense.

“Therefore, there was no legal or logical basis for imposing such a severe preventive measure, especially in this form,” the lawyer added.
