Split in opposition will deepen under conditions of boycott”

“There can be several main reasons for the current uncertainty and inactivity in the political field: first, the candidate of the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) is beyond rivalry, at least at the moment, while the other political forces are unwilling to waste their scarce resources. Secondly, the crisis elements in the political field have a tendency to deepen. Thirdly, the first and second reasons together,» political scientist Tigran Abrahamian said during a talk with Aysor.am.

When asked what consequences the holding of an election in such conditions – there are hardly any presidential candidates - may have, the expert replied: «Let's not hurry, the nomination process has not started yet and it is still not clear who will put up his candidacy. Yet, ensuring competition is an important precondition, a necessity for holding democratic elections. It is another matter that some political forces have chosen a boycott as a form of struggle and try to prove at any price that it is impossible to hold elections in line with democratic standards in the country”.

In the political scientist’s opinion, a boycott is also a form of expressing one’s position, but now it will not solve any problem of the opposition, while the split will further deepen.
