Adibekian: 25 years after quake, 3,000 families have housing problem

25 years have passed since the Spitak earthquake, but 3,000 families in the earthquake zone still have housing problems, sociologist Aharon Adibekian said at a meeting with reporters today, when speaking about the devastating earthquake of December 7, 1988.

In his words, this problem as well as the problem of restoration and operation of industrial enterprises should have been solved under the second Armenian President Robert Kocharian, which was not done and unemployment has become a chronic illness.

“There are still elderly who live in temporary shelters in the earthquake zone, but no complaints are voiced, which means there is no problem,” Adibekian noted.

In his words, the main problem has been solved: ruins were removed and attempts are made to reconstruct accident-prone buildings, although ‘there is a deep break across Leninakan-Spitak highway and a danger that the earthquake may recur’.
