Safaryan: Customs Union deviated from its goal
As a political structure, the Customs Union (CU) has a long path to follow, the political analyst Stepan Safaryan said at a meeting with journalists.
“One can say the CU has deviated from the goal set before it. Putin wanted to see the Customs Union as a political project, which was not realized,” Safaryan noted.
He stressed that this uncertainty for Yerevan is advantageous to Russia.
“If the relations between Armenia and the CU are not being clarified, it means that the relations between Armenia and the EU are not being clarified as well. In other words, the purpose of this game is to prevent Armenia from deepening its relationship with the European Union,” the political scientist said.
According to him, the EU will start to specify its relations with Armenia only when the directions of the country’s cooperation with the CU become clear.
Safaryan said that Russia protracts Armenia’s entry into the CU not only because of its far-reaching goals related to Azerbaijan, but also because it does not want Armenia to continue any relations with the EU.
